In the days that follow, Ashley and I decide it’s time to stop hiding our friendship. We’re not broadcasting our romance, but we’re no longer sneaking around like a couple of spies either. It feels freeing, like we’re finally allowing ourselves to just be us. We start rolling to school together every morning. Ashley’s got her hand on the wheel, and I’m in the passenger seat, choosing the music, and we’re both just laughing and talking nonsense before the day kicks off. It’s chill, but every time we pull up at school, I feel the stares. Like we're some kind of live show for the whole campus.

And then there’s practice. I never thought I’d be the type to be into someone else's sports practice, but there I am, sitting on the bleachers, watching Ashley run like the wind's chasing her. I can't help but cheer her on. She grins every time she hears my voice above the rest, and it’s like a little victory every day. With me as the captain of the cheer squad, I start noticing Ashley hanging around more, too. She’s there, sitting cross-legged on the grass, pretending to be all casual, but I catch her eyes following the routines. I see the other students whispering and pointing when they think we’re not looking. They're all wondering what’s going on with us, but neither of us cares enough to give them an answer.

Then there’s lunchtime at Emily’s. It's become the norm now for me to just head over to Ashley's place. Emily’s always cooking up something protein-packed for Ashley, and initially, I’m all scrunched up nose at it. But then, I take a real bite, and damn, Emily can cook. Before I know it, I'm asking for seconds and Emily’s laughing, saying I’ll need the energy if I’m going to keep up with Ashley.

Even Dad's changing. He’s cutting back on the drinks and starts asking about Summer and me more—school, cheer, everything. It's like he's got selective amnesia about that whole blow-up over Ashley.

And Mom? She’s out and about, not to her usual fancy soirees, but to yoga and meditation classes. Sometimes she joins us for lunch, and her and Emily get along like they've been friends for years. There was this one time I caught them whispering in the kitchen, all cozy like. I quickly shake that image out of my head. Can't be anything, right?

Eliza—she’s gone radio silent on me. One day we're besties, the next, she's like a stranger. Rumor has it Catherine's been filling her head with all kinds of nonsense about me. Whatever, I’ve got bigger fish to fry. And Catherine? She’s dipped out of sight, claiming she’s sick or something. Misses practice, misses school. Part of me wonders if it’s just to avoid me, but honestly, I don’t miss the drama.

And me? I’m keeping busy. Joined this women's floor exercises club.

The first day felt like stepping onto another planet. I’m used to being the one calling the shots, but here I’m a newbie, tripping over my own feet, trying to nail these routines.
